Parish History

Clustered with Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Ravenna; Serving:
St. Francis Church, Ashton and St. Gabiel Church, Hazard.

The earliest sign of any formation into a congregational unit comes in 1881, when J. Woods Smith donated 12 lots (one half of Block 13) to the handful of Catholic families on the condition that they start building a church immediately and a school within five years. Thus in 1882 the erection of a small frame church was begun. It was called St. Joseph's Church.

The first Church was destroyed by a tornado June 5, 1896. On July 15, 1908 a beautiful brick church was completed and dedicated. The present Church contains the stained glass windows from the old Church. The sign in front was made from beams of the old Church. The Church seats about 600 and was dedicated November 21, 1972
