t. XVIII w.
Pasterze mili, * Coście widzieli?
Widzieliśmy Maleńkiego * Jezusa narodzonego,
Syna Bożego, Syna Bożego.
Co za pałac miał, * Gdzie gospodą stał?
Szopa bydłu przyzwoita * I to jeszcze źle pokryta
Pałacem była.
Jakie łóżeczko * Miał Paniąteczko?
Marmur twardy, żłób kamienny. * Na tym depozyt zbawienny
Spoczywał łożu.
Co za obicie * Miało to Dziecię?
Wisząc spod strzech pajęczyna * Boga oraz Matki Syna
Obiciem była.
W jakiej odzieży * Pan nieba leży?
Za purpurę, perły drogie * Ustroiła Go w ubogie
Pieluszki nędza.
Kto asystował, * Kto Go pilnował?
Wół i osioł przyklękali, * Parą Go swą ogrzewali,
Dworzanie Jego.
Jakie kapele * Nuciły trele?
Aniołowie Mu śpiewali, * My na dudkach przygrywali
Skocznie, wesoło.
Jakieście dary * Dali ofiary?
Sercaśmy własne oddali, * A odchodząc poklękali,
Czołem Mu bili.

0121-2. Tell us shepherds
Tell us, shepherds, pray, what you've seen today.
We have seen the Infant Holy
In the manger, born so lowly,
Son of God, Divine! (2)
In what royal might rests the King tonight?
In a stable midst privation,
Lies the God of all creation,
Not a palace fine!
And what costly bed had the Lord instead?
Just a little straw for bedding
And the hay discomfort adding
Served Him for a bed.
In what regal clothes did the King repose?
Velvet cloth was not around Him;
Just the swaddlings lightly bound Him.
Thus the Lord was clad.
Of what august sort was the royal court?
Just a donkey humbly kneeling,
And the ox his faith revealing,
Were his royal train.
And what chorus gay offered song today?
Shepherds joined the angel choirs
Played the flutes and struck the lyres
In a glad refrain.
And to please the King had you gifts to bring?
In our faith we knelt before Him
Bowing deeply, did adore Him
Offering our love.
Let us hasten, too, bringing gifts anew.
Christ the Infant ever blessing
Will reward us with possessing
Truest life above.
English Translation: Felician Sisters
0121-3. Shepherds Dear
Shepherds dear, oh pray, * What saw you this day?
We have seen the Infant Jesus,
Born to earth, from sin to free us,
Son of God and man, * Son of God and man.
Was His castle grand? * What did He command?
He was born in an old stable,
Roofless, cold, fit but for cattle,
Such was His domain, * Such was His domain.
English Translation: Cecily Kowalewska Helgersen
0121-4. Tell Us Shepherds Fair
Tell us, shepherds fair, * What did you see there?
We saw Jesus in a manger, * Born this day to be our Savior,
Born the Son of God, * Born the Son of God.
Was His palace grand, * Where was His command? *
In a stable poorly covered, * Born this night while cattle hovered,
This was His abode, * This was His abode.
English Translation: Polish National Catholic Hymnal
Shepherds, can you tell
Dear shepherds, what have you seen?
We have seen the tiny Jesus born,
The Son of God.
What palace did he have where did it stand for his lodging?
A sturdy cattle-shed - though still it hardly shelters him -
Was his palace.
Who was present to look after him?
The ox and the ass, kneeling, warming him with their breath,
Were his courtiers.
