Parish History

"This church was incorporated in 1890 by Slavic immigrants loyal to the Roman Catholic Church.  In 1892 the group built a frame church at 16th Ave. NE and Main St. In 1909 the congregation moved to 12th Ave. and 3rd St., and erected a second frame church that burned down in 1911.  The present church, located at 1305-15 Second St. NE, was designed by architect Victor Cordella in the Renaissance Revival style with an elaborate Baroque tower.  It was dedicated in 1917.

Upon incorporation, the church was named after St. Cyril alone because Archbishop John Ireland felt that one saint was sufficient in the name even though both saints were were of equal importance in the founding of Christianity in Eastern Europe.  In 1980, however, the Diocese relented and allowed the addition of St. Methodius's name.
